How to read the energy news
Energy headlines are notoriously easy to misread. A single monthly data point rarely signals a trend, and prices swing on expectations as much as on facts. The most reliable habit is to trace a story back to its source — an agency report, a company filing, an official statistic — and to ask what would have to be true for the headline to hold. For raw numbers, the EIA's Today in Energy series is a model of clear, sourced explanation. Our own guides on how energy markets work and the energy transition are built to give any headline context.
Explainer: why one number rarely tells the story
Take a report that U.S. oil production “fell” in a given week. Weekly figures are estimates, revised later; weather, maintenance, and holidays create noise; and a dip can coexist with a rising annual trend. Reading the direction of travel — the multi-month average, the rig count, the storage level — beats reacting to a single print. The same discipline applies to dramatic claims about the energy transition, where electricity trends (fast-moving) are easily confused with total energy including transport and industry (slower-moving).

When a story mentions a boom or a bust in “the Permian” or “the Bakken,” it helps to know what those names mean and why each region behaves differently.
